CHAPTER IX

ORDERED ABROAD

I HAVE made no mention of the hundreds of personal cipher letters that were sent to MI-8 by the postal censorship for decipherment. Now and then one of these contained military information, but for the most part they were written by persons to conceal clandestine love-affairs. One of them from a trapper to his sweetheart is very amusing. I have retained his spelling and have underlined the words that were not enciphered.

My dearest own,

Received your loving letter o.k. Was more then glad to hear from my love. Oh hun, so he was to stay with you from Sat till Sun night. Well, then, you wasent lonesom or homesick and even asked him to come next Sat and stay till Sunday night. He says he is going and he took you a lot of things for you and babe. And you a new Easter hat. Ge it must have ben a nice day tomorrow to want to come so quick again.

Well, love, I dident have very good luck, only 32 rats; that only means 35 dollars.

Hun, shall I use 8 of that for you know what? Love, I am a lot better, am going to fish a while, tho then I am going on the road with Dad.

But I do want to see you afuly bad but nothing any more searus then the longing of my heart. It is not sickness but love. I do pray you will get free for some one to woe and win your love again, Darling. Mother is having another one of those times with her stomack. You know when she has those aful pains and vomit so, she is vomating now. Well, so long till I heare from you again. You will find a stamp. Good by, my love, my own. A kiss to you and mine.

The writing of cipher love-letters was not confined to the illiterate. The cipher urge also included the educated in their clandestine love correspondence. However, most of the letters that are interesting would be considered too obscene for publication. All of the cipher letters were very easy to solve, so easy that it rather worried me to see husbands and wives trust their illicit correspondence to such unsafe methods.

Another amusing cipher message was intercepted by our wireless stations. It was addressed to
